Llansantffraed History Society - February 2014
The Speaker for the February meeting was Michael Freeman, who having retired from his post as Curator of Ceredigion Museum, is now spending a great deal of his time doing research. One of his interests is the First World War and how it affected people in Ceredigion. In the presentation he gave to the Society on February  3rd were many interesting discoveries from soldiers’ letters, tribunal records, books and statistics. It is estimated that at least 1000 Ceredigion servicemen  died, some after the War as a result of physical and mental damage. Documentation of tribunals  showed a variety of reasons why some men refused to fight, ranging from sons who were needed to help run family farms to objections on religious grounds. Those who failed to win their case were imprisoned, made to do hard labour or sent to the battle front to do non combatant service such as medical assistance or ambulance driving. The latter was also done by female volunteers. The role of the suffragettes was also outlined – they put their energies into  urging wives to tell their husbands to join up in  order to protect their families. Even children played their part by helping with crop gathering on farms and from the hedgerows and gathering moss, a source of antiseptic.

On the 3rd March Dr. Eryn White will be talking about Daniel Rowlands, Llangeitho.7.30 pm, Reading Room, Llanon
